Development of a Dielectric Lens for Improving Space Segment Satellite Communications in E-Band
Purpose and goal
The project aims to design, manufacture, and qualify a multilayer dielectric lens antenna that enhances the performance of next-generation satellite communication systems. Advanced ray-tracing algorithms are combined with additive manufacturing to deliver a compact, lightweight, and high-performance lens that reduces scan losses, minimizes side lobes, and maintains polarization purity.
Expected effects and result
The project introduces a breakthrough in antenna performance and manufacturability, supporting Europe’s competitiveness in satellite communications. The multilayer dielectric lens will be validated to space qualification standards, opening the path toward integration into operational satellite missions.
Planned approach and implementation
Northern Waves leads the additive manufacturing of the lens while KTH develops ray-tracing algorithms for design optimization. The approach simultaneously tackles technical challenges at high frequencies and strategic objectives for strengthening European leadership in satellite communications.
